From Nappies to Notebooks: My Journey from Nanny to Personal Assistant

My Whirlwind Career Journey: From Nanny to Executive Assistant

Starting as a Nanny: The Early Days

Once upon a time, in a land filled with laughter and love, I embarked on a fantastic journey as a nanny. Over the course of ten glorious years, I worked with five wonderful families. It was a rollercoaster ride of giggles, nappy changes, and bedtime stories. Those early days were truly magical, filled with the innocent laughter of children and the warmth of family bonds. But after a decade of nurturing little ones, I felt it was time for a change. Personal assistant, I thought—it’s like babysitting, but with bigger babies (haha). And guess what? I’m still in touch with those families and have incredible relationships with them, even ten years later!

A Foray into the Civil Service: Trials and Tribulations

The leap to becoming a personal assistant was no fairy tale. Despite my enthusiasm and determination, I struggled to land any interviews. So, I pivoted and joined the Civil Service as a Work Coach in the Department for Work and Pensions. Those two and a half years were like a crash course in resilience, revealing the toxic environment within the Department for Work and Pensions. After being denied the opportunity to apply for a personal assistant role within the Department for Work and Pensions, it became clear I had to find something more uplifting and positive.

Diving into the Corporate World: A Mix of Highs and Lows

My next adventure took me to an asset management company, where I thrived as an executive assistant for the compliance team. I loved the role and the team. I learnt so much and developed a keen interest in financial compliance. The office was relaxed, fun, and incredibly supportive—a whole world away from the toxic Department for Work and Pensions. I wanted to stay forever! However, destiny had other plans—I was made redundant after just one year. It was a tough blow, but I was determined to bounce back.

Temping and Thriving: Embracing the Hustle

Faced with the challenge of finding a permanent role, I dove into the world of temporary positions. One highlight was working as a personal assistant to the Chief Executive Officer of the manager of The Shard in London. I got to see the Christmas lights switch on and felt very much part of the team. What a view and what an experience! I embraced the hustle, learning and growing with each new role.

Landing in Local Government: Finding Stability

After nineteen months of temping, my bank account was running on empty, so I started applying for anything and everything, including local government roles. Eventually, I secured a position with virtual schools, and I was genuinely excited. It was a brilliant organisation and felt like a great opportunity. Right after my first week, I jetted off to Gran Canaria with my boyfriend—a fantastic getaway! While basking in the sun, I interviewed for a personal assistant role to a corporate director and aced it! Returning to the United Kingdom meant handing in my notice, but the plot thickened…

Unexpected Twists: Health Scares and New Beginnings

Just as things were looking up, I had to undergo emergency surgery for a painful abscess. A week of recovery meant I could not work my notice period. I felt so bad that I had only worked for one week in my new role and was already leaving, but I had to do what was best for me. Talk about a plot twist!

Fast forward to the start of 2025—new year, new job! I have embarked on yet another adventure in a role I am loving, and I am excited to see where it leads. Here is to new beginnings and endless possibilities!

Love,
